No Place to Hide

Glenn Greenwald’s *No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State* (2014) is a first-person account of how the author, then a columnist for The Guardian, became one of the primary journalists to report on the classified documents leaked by National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The book opens in Hong Kong in June 2013, where Greenwald and filmmaker Laura Poitras meet Snowden, who reveals himself as the source behind a series of disclosures about mass surveillance programs. Greenwald structures the narrative around the documents themselves, detailing specific NSA programs such as PRISM, which collects data from major technology companies; Upstream, which taps fiber-optic cables; and the bulk collection of domestic phone metadata under Section 215 of the Patriot Act. He also describes the XKeyscore system, which allows analysts to search vast databases of emails, browsing histories, and online chats. A central argument is that these programs were built not only to target foreign enemies but to create a system of domestic surveillance capable of being turned against journalists and political dissidents. The book further chronicles the legal and political battles that followed publication, including the U.S. government’s threats to prosecute Greenwald and The Guardian, the destruction of hard drives at the newspaper’s London office, and Snowden’s eventual exile in Russia. Greenwald also examines the aftermath, including debates over privacy, the role of a free press, and the chilling effect on democratic dissent. The title reflects his thesis that digital technology has eliminated any meaningful place to hide from state observation.
