In No Rules Rules, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings and INSEAD professor Erin Meyer argue that a company built on rigid process and approval chains cannot innovate fast enough for a fast-changing market. Their alternative is a culture of "freedom and responsibility," assembled as a sequential model: first build talent density by hiring only the best and generously severing merely adequate performers; then increase candor, teaching employees to give and receive direct feedback; then remove controls such as vacation limits, travel and expense approvals, and decision sign-offs. Only after those steps, they contend, can leaders pay top-of-market salaries and treat people like fully informed adults. The book alternates Hastings's first-person accounts from inside Netflix with Meyer's research on global management cultures, including interviews with Netflix employees and experiments such as the famous "keeper test," in which managers ask whether they would fight to keep a team member. It explores the "farming for dissent" practice of pushing junior employees to challenge senior decisions, the slogan that adequate performance earns a generous severance rather than a performance plan, and the claim that context, not control, should guide decisions. Meyer also cautions that these practices transplant poorly into cultures with strong hierarchy or high power distance. Framed as a set of counterintuitive lessons from Netflix's transition from DVD rentals to streaming, the book is a management manifesto about leading with context and candor rather than rules.
