Normal People

Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People, published in 2018, follows Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron from their final year of secondary school in Carricklea, County Sligo, through their undergraduate years at Trinity College Dublin. The book is structured as a series of dated sections spanning roughly five years, each returning to the same two protagonists at a different point in their on-again, off-again relationship. Rooney alternates close third-person narration between Marianne and Connell, so readers see the same events filtered through two very different interior perspectives. The central dynamic is a class and status reversal. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked while Marianne is isolated and treated as an oddity; at Trinity, Marianne becomes socially successful and wealthy, while Connell feels like an outsider among her new friends. Their relationship begins in secret because Connell worries about what his friends would think, a decision that shapes much of the hurt that follows. Rooney uses this setup to explore miscommunication, shame, and the gap between what people feel and what they are able to say. The novel also examines class, family, and mental health. Marianne’s household is abusive, and Connell struggles with depression and anxiety, particularly after a friend’s death. Rooney’s style is spare and dialogue-driven, with little quotation punctuation, and her recurring device is the gap between a character’s interpretation and what actually happened. Normal People is often described as a love story about two people who continually misunderstand each other, and it was adapted into a widely watched 2020 television series.
