Nudge

In Nudge, Nobel laureate Richard H. Thaler and co-author Cass R. Sunstein argue that because humans are not perfectly rational "Econs" but rather fallible "Humans," the design of choice environments matters enormously. Their central framework is "libertarian paternalism," the idea that institutions can guide people toward better decisions while preserving their freedom to choose otherwise. The person who structures those choices is the "choice architect," and the tools they use are "nudges"—small changes to defaults, framing, and feedback that steer behavior without banning options or significantly changing incentives. The book builds its case through concepts like "nudges" versus "shoves," the difference between automatic and reflective thinking, and phenomena such as anchoring, availability, and loss aversion drawn from Thaler's own work with Daniel Kahneman. A recurring illustration is the cafeteria layout: placing fruit at eye level increases consumption without removing junk food. The authors examine default enrollment in retirement savings plans, arguing that automatic 401(k) participation dramatically raises saving rates, and they discuss organ donation, where opt-out systems yield higher consent than opt-in ones. Later chapters apply these ideas to personal finance, health, and public policy, including the "Save More Tomorrow" plan Thaler designed with Shlomo Benartzi, which commits workers to future raises going partly into savings. The book also envisions a government "nudge unit" and addresses objections about manipulation, arguing that some choice architecture is unavoidable, so it may as well be designed well. Nudge remains a foundational text in behavioral economics and public policy.
