On Beauty

Zadie Smith’s novel *On Beauty* is a contemporary campus comedy of manners set largely in the fictional Boston suburb of Wellington. It follows two academic families: the Belseys, headed by the British art historian Howard Belsey, and the Kiki-hating, conservative Rembrandt scholar Sir Montague Kipps. The book opens with Howard’s eldest son, Jerome, briefly working for the Kipps family in London and becoming engaged to their daughter, Victoria, before the engagement abruptly collapses. This humiliation sets the stage for the Kipps family’s arrival in Wellington, where Montague is to give a prestigious lecture, forcing the two clans into uneasy proximity. Smith structures the novel around shifting third-person perspectives, giving voice to Howard’s wife Kiki, a Black American nurse whose marriage is strained by Howard’s infidelity, and to their children: Jerome, Zora, and Levi. Each character navigates questions of beauty, authenticity, and belonging. Howard’s academic work on Rembrandt is stalled by his cynical belief that aesthetic value is a social construct, a stance that clashes with Montague’s reverent traditionalism. Zora, a student at Wellington, becomes entangled with a charismatic spoken-word poet, while Levi drifts toward a group of Haitian street vendors, exploring cultural tourism and appropriation. The novel deliberately echoes E. M. Forster’s *Howards End*, transplanting its “only connect” motto into a racially charged, postcolonial academic setting. Smith examines how class, race, and gender shape judgments of art and people, and how family loyalties survive ideological conflict. The title refers not to a treatise but to the novel’s central question: what does it mean to find something beautiful when your politics distrust the very idea? Published in 2005, *On Beauty* won the Orange Prize for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
