On Television

Pierre Bourdieu’s On Television, first published in French in 1996 as Sur la télévision, collects two lectures he delivered at the Collège de France in 1996, plus a shorter piece on the press and a postscript on journalism and politics. Bourdieu, a sociologist, argues that television’s apparent openness masks a system of structural censorship. His central framework is the “field of journalism,” a competitive space where ratings and scoops impose hidden constraints on what can be said and shown. He introduces the idea that television favors “fast thinkers”—those who can produce soundbites under time pressure—and marginalizes slower, more rigorous analysis. A key concept is “invisible censorship”: the unwritten rules that keep certain topics, speakers, and viewpoints off the air, not through explicit bans but through professional routines and audience metrics. He also examines how the pursuit of audience share homogenizes news, creating a “circular circulation of information” where outlets copy one another and call it competition. Bourdieu critiques “media intellectuals” who trade scholarly authority for televised visibility, and he warns that journalism’s logic increasingly infiltrates other fields, including academia, law, and politics. The book is short, polemical, and based on his own observations of French television in the mid-1990s. Its recurring target is the unexamined power of the small screen to define public reality. The postscript calls for scholars and citizens to resist this symbolic domination. On Television remains a foundational critique of media from a sociological perspective, not a practical guide.
