On Tyranny

Timothy Snyder’s 2017 book *On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century* is a short, direct political polemic drawn from his expertise in Eastern European history and the Holocaust. Written after the 2016 U.S. election, it distills lessons from the collapse of democracies in Weimar Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, and interwar and postwar Eastern Europe into twenty numbered lessons. Snyder argues that tyranny in the twentieth century rarely arrived through a single coup; it advanced through the erosion of institutions, norms, and civic courage, and he contends that American democracy is vulnerable to similar decay. The lessons include “Do not obey in advance,” which warns against anticipating a leader’s wishes and thereby legitimizing authoritarian behavior; “Defend institutions,” which stresses that rights live in courts, legislatures, unions, and a free press rather than in abstractions; and “Beware the one-party state,” which urges support for multiparty democracy even when one’s preferred party wins. Others include “Take responsibility for the face of the world,” about resisting dehumanizing symbols; “Be kind to our language,” about avoiding propaganda-laden euphemism; and “Stand out,” which rejects the comfort of blending in. Snyder also advises “Believe in truth,” “Investigate,” “Make eye contact and small talk,” “Practice corporeal politics,” “Establish a private life,” “Contribute to good causes,” “Learn from peers in other countries,” “Listen for dangerous words,” “Be calm when the unthinkable arrives,” “Be a patriot,” “Be as courageous as you can,” and finally “Be a citizen,” not merely a subject. The book is a manual of civic resistance, not a policy program, and its historical examples anchor each lesson in real events rather than abstraction.
