One L

Scott Turow’s One L is a memoir of his first year at Harvard Law School, published in 1977. The book takes its title from the nickname for first-year law students, and it remains one of the most widely read accounts of legal education in America. Turow, later famous as the novelist behind Presumed Innocent, entered Harvard in 1975 after several years of teaching, and the book follows him through the full academic year alongside a small circle of classmates. The narrative is organized around the arc of that year rather than a single argument. It opens with orientation and the anxiety of the unknown, then moves into the signature Harvard method: large classes where professors use Socratic questioning, pressing students to extract rules from appellate cases in courses like Contracts, Torts, Property, Civil Procedure, and Criminal Law. Turow describes the nightly grind of briefing cases, the shock of cold-calling, and the way grades and the curve reshape friendships and self-image. A recurring thread is the tension between learning to “think like a lawyer” and holding onto earlier moral instincts, especially in a legal ethics course and in classroom debates over justice versus advocacy.
