Edward Snowden’s 2019 memoir Permanent Record recounts his path from a politically curious suburban childhood in Maryland and North Carolina to his work as a CIA and NSA contractor, and finally to his decision to leak classified surveillance documents in 2013. The book’s central framework is Snowden’s argument that the internet’s original architecture, which he describes as an early culture of open systems and playful experimentation, was deliberately converted into what he calls the world’s first “internet of things” for mass surveillance, a system he labels the “turnkey tyranny.” Rather than a generic whistleblower narrative, the memoir builds its case through specific episodes: his early fascination with Nintendo and early online bulletin boards, his attempt to join the Army Special Forces and his discharge after breaking both legs, his technical roles at the CIA station in Geneva, and his work as a systems administrator for Booz Allen Hamilton at an NSA facility in Hawaii. The book’s protagonist is Snowden himself as a quietly principled technologist, and its recurring experiment is his growing use of internal “ask” systems and audit trails to demonstrate what metadata can reveal about ordinary people. He details building a “dead man’s switch” and coordinating with journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, then fleeing to Hong Kong and eventually Moscow. Permanent Record argues that unaccountable mass collection, not terrorism, has become the default function of modern networks.
