In Predictably Irrational, Duke behavioral economist Dan Ariely argues that human beings are not the rational actors classical economics assumes, but that our mistakes follow consistent, foreseeable patterns. The book grew out of Ariely’s research and his popular MIT course, and it walks through experiments—many conducted with students and online participants—that expose these patterns. A central idea is relativity: we judge options by comparison rather than absolute value, as in his well-known decoy experiment involving subscription offers to The Economist, where an unattractive third option pushed people toward the priciest choice. He examines anchoring, showing how random numbers can sway later estimates, and the power of free, demonstrated in experiments where a free chocolate attracted far more takers than a cheap one, even when the paid option was a better deal. Ariely also explores the cost of social versus market norms, contrasting how people behave when favors are framed as friendship rather than payment, and describes the “IKEA effect,” the inflated value we place on things we assemble ourselves. Chapters cover procrastination and self-control, the gap between how we predict we will feel and how we actually feel, the allure and rationalization of cheating, and the placebo effect of price—how expensive pills can outperform cheap ones. He also discusses keeping doors open, or the toll of leaving options unresolved, and the tension between what we want in the “hot” state versus the “cold” state. Throughout, Ariely draws on standard experimental methods and his own studies, arguing that recognizing our predictable irrationality can help us design better decisions, institutions, and policies.
