Present Over Perfect

In Present Over Perfect, Shauna Niequist describes her own move away from a life built on achievement, hustle, and other people’s expectations and toward what she calls being present over perfect. The book is a collection of short, memoir-style essays rather than a step-by-step program, and it grew out of a period when Niequist, then living in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and two sons, found herself exhausted, anxious, and disconnected despite outward success. She traces much of that striving to her upbringing as the daughter of a well-known pastor and to a personality shaped by performance, people-pleasing, and an addiction to busyness. Recurring threads include saying yes when she means no, the difference between being needed and being known, and the cost of a full calendar on friendship, marriage, and rest. Niequist writes about specific practices and shifts she adopted: learning to build unstructured time into her days, taking a weekly sabbath, seeking a therapist, and moving her family from the Chicago area to a smaller, slower life near Lake Michigan. She also describes the painful work of untangling ambition from identity, letting friendships deepen through honesty instead of convenience, and learning to sit with boredom and silence rather than fill every gap with productivity. The book’s central argument is that presence, love, and connection are worth more than the approval and accomplishments she once chased, and that choosing them often requires grieving the version of herself she thought she had to be. It is explicitly Christian in its reflections on grace, prayer, and surrender, but much of its appeal has been to readers of any or no faith who recognize the exhaustion of performing. Present Over Perfect became a New York Times bestseller after its 2016 release.
