Radical Candor

In Radical Candor, Kim Scott argues that effective management rests on two dimensions: caring personally about the people who work for you and challenging them directly. The book grew out of Scott’s experiences at Google and Apple, where she observed that leaders often fail by swinging between two unproductive extremes—ruinous empathy, where they withhold criticism to avoid hurting feelings, and obnoxious aggression, where they criticize without genuine concern. Her framework diagrams these behaviors against a vertical axis of care and a horizontal axis of challenge. Scott’s central tools include the “give a damn” principle, the guidance equation for soliciting and offering feedback, and the distinction between rock stars and superstars—steady, growth-focused contributors versus those on a steep trajectory. Scott draws on her time leading teams at Google, including her work on AdSense, and later at Apple, where she reported to Sheryl Sandberg and later led a team under Tim Cook.
