In Resonate, Nancy Duarte argues that the most persuasive presentations are structured not as reports but as journeys, alternating between two poles she calls "what is" and "what could be." The book grew out of Duarte's team's extensive study of famous speeches, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" and Steve Jobs's iPhone launch, which they analyzed to map how effective communicators move audiences. Duarte presents the "sparkline" as her central visual framework, a waveform that oscillates between current reality and future possibility, with a call to action and a "new bliss" near the end. She contrasts this with the typical business presentation, which she depicts as a flat line of undifferentiated information. The book is organized in three sections. The first, "The Importance of Story," covers how to develop a big idea, classify presentations by purpose, and use audience analysis to understand what listeners need. The second, "The Structure of Story," details the sparkline and the "presentation plot," drawing on the hero's journey and the S.T.A.R. moment, a dramatic turning point designed to make an emotional point land. The third, "The Art of Story," addresses delivery: visuals, contrast, repetition, and the "star moment." Duarte, who heads the presentation-design firm Duarte Design, grounds the advice in her client work and in close readings of speeches by figures such as Ronald Reagan and Richard Feynman. Rather than offering generic confidence tips, Resonate treats presentation as a craft with analyzable mechanics, and its frameworks have been widely adopted in business communication training.
