Reviving Ophelia

In Reviving Ophelia, psychologist Mary Pipher argues that adolescent girls in America are like Shakespeare’s Ophelia: joyful and assertive in childhood, then silenced and fragmented by adolescence. Drawing on decades of clinical practice in Lincoln, Nebraska, Pipher describes how girls between roughly eleven and twenty lose their “true selves” as they enter a culture that pressures them to be pretty, passive, and pleasing. Its title evokes the drowned Ophelia of Hamlet, whom Pipher sees as a symbol of girls whose voices and selves are lost, and her aim is to help them be “revived” rather than diminished.
