Rework

Rework by Jason Fried, co-written with David Heinemeier Hansson, argues that many standard business practices—long hours, bloated budgets, elaborate plans—are unnecessary or harmful. The book grew out of the authors' experience running 37signals, the small software company behind Basecamp, and it is organized as a series of short, blunt essays rather than a step-by-step manual. Its recurring antagonists are the venture-capital playbook, the "workaholic" ideal, and the assumption that growth for its own sake equals success. Fried and Hansson reject the notion that starting a business requires massive funding, a formal office, or a staff. They advocate "scratch your own itch"—building something that solves your own problem—and emphasize starting small, staying lean, and launching sooner than feels comfortable. Several chapters target planning and meetings directly: "Planning is guessing," and meetings are treated as a tax on productive work. They also criticize the "ASAP" mentality and encourage setting realistic, sustainable workloads, famously asserting that you should work less and sleep more. A distinctive thread is embracing constraints: limited time, money, and attention force sharper decisions. The authors argue that a business can be a "calm company" rather than a hypergrowth machine, and they defend staying small as a legitimate, even preferable, outcome. Marketing advice is similarly contrarian—teach, share what you know, and let customers come to you rather than chasing press. The overall argument is less a formula than a stance: ignore the conventional wisdom of the business world when it doesn't fit your situation, keep your operation simple, and focus on making something useful. Rework has been widely cited as a concise counterpoint to traditional entrepreneurship guides.
