Emma Donoghue’s 2010 novel Room is narrated by five-year-old Jack, who has spent his entire life inside a single soundproofed shed where his Ma has been held captive for seven years. Jack knows only “Room,” its skylight, wardrobe, bed, and the routine he and Ma share; he believes the world beyond the walls exists only on television. Donoghue built the novel around Jack’s limited but vivid vocabulary and logic, so ordinary objects become proper nouns and the full scale of the situation emerges gradually through his misreadings. The book is divided into sections tracking his confinement, escape, and difficult adjustment to Outside, where cars, stairs, crowds, and other people overwhelm a child raised in a 121-square-foot space. Donoghue has said she was inspired by the Elisabeth Fritzl case and by the parent-child dynamic of room-bound captivity, and she wrote Jack’s voice by studying how children acquire language. Ma’s strategies for keeping Jack stimulated, such as inventing physical “Phys Ed” exercises, rationing treats, and turning routine into games, form the novel’s emotional core. Much of the second half concerns Ma’s own psychological aftermath, including her struggle with depression, media scrutiny, and the question of whether Jack can ever live normally. Room was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and adapted into the 2015 film starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. Its distinctive achievement is the sustained first-person child’s perspective on trauma, captivity, and recovery.
