Ash Maurya’s Running Lean is a hands-on guide to building startups by systematically testing ideas before committing scarce resources. Originally published in 2010 and revised in later editions, the book adapts Eric Ries’s Lean Startup methodology into a concrete process centered on Maurya’s Lean Canvas, a one-page business model tool he derived from Alexander Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas but reworked for startups. Where the original canvas emphasizes partners, activities, and resources, Maurya replaces those blocks with Problem, Solution, Key Metrics, and Unfair Advantage, arguing that early-stage ventures should prioritize customer problems and measurable traction over elaborate planning. The book’s spine is a three-stage progression: Problem/Solution Fit, Product/Market Fit, and Scale. Maurya insists that most startup failure comes from building something nobody wants, so he prescribes running experiments before writing code. Central to this is the concept of the Minimum Viable Product, which he defines not as the smallest product but as the fastest way to begin validated learning with real customers. He introduces techniques such as customer interviews to map problems, the “problem presentation” to confirm demand, and a system of metrics that separates vanity numbers from actionable ones, including his framework of qualitative learning, quantitative business-model validation, and cohort-based engagement tracking. Maurya, a repeat founder, writes from his own experience with products that failed before he applied these methods, giving the book a practical, iterative tone.
