Sacred Hoops

Phil Jackson’s Sacred Hoops, first published in 1992 and later revised as Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior, is a memoir of coaching the Chicago Bulls that doubles as a manifesto for what Jackson calls “the basketball liturgy.” The book traces his path from a Pentecostal upbringing and 1970s counterculture to the head-coaching job in Chicago, where he inherited a talented but individualistic roster led by Michael Jordan. Rather than a conventional sports memoir, it argues that a team can function like a tribe or a spiritual community when ego gives way to awareness. Jackson’s distinctive framework is the “triangle offense,” the system he learned from assistant coach Tex Winter, in which ball and player movement replace isolation and set plays. He pairs it with Zen practice and Native American ritual, describing meditation, mindfulness, and pregame ceremonies as tools for quieting the “monkey mind.” His central argument is that selflessness, not self-sacrifice, produces freedom: players who trust the system become more creative, not less. The book recounts his early struggles building that trust with Jordan and the Bulls, including his decision to hand Jordan the captaincy and his insistence that the team’s success not depend on one star. Later sections follow Jackson to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he applied the same methods with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Throughout, he contrasts the win-at-all-costs model with a “sacred” approach in which competition becomes a form of practice. Widely reported as a key influence on coaching literature, Sacred Hoops remains specific to Jackson’s own teams, beliefs, and experiments rather than offering generic advice.
