Laura Hillenbrand’s Seabiscuit, published in 2001, tells the true story of an unlikely champion Thoroughbred during the Great Depression. The book interweaves three central figures: Charles Howard, a wealthy auto salesman who lost his son in a car crash and bought a struggling stable; Tom Smith, a taciturn mustang breaker and trainer; and Red Pollard, a half-blind, journeyman jockey abandoned by his family. The book’s central experiment is the 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral at Pimlico, billed as the East Coast establishment versus the West, though Hillenbrand builds to it through years of grueling cross-country campaigns, injuries, and comebacks. She also highlights the horse’s unusual training under Smith—long, slow gallops and herbal remedies—and Pollard’s ingenious, improvised riding style to compensate for his blindness. The argument is less about self-improvement than about luck, trauma, and second chances: a broken horse, a broken jockey, a widowed owner, and a migrant trainer all find purpose in one another. Seabiscuit became a bestseller and was adapted into a 2003 film; it remains a landmark of narrative sports nonfiction, grounded in archival research and interviews with surviving connections.
