Hermann Hesse’s 1922 novel Siddhartha follows a Brahmin youth in ancient India who leaves home to seek spiritual enlightenment. The book is divided into two parts and twelve chapters, tracing Siddhartha through distinct phases: asceticism with the Samanas, where he fasts and meditates; a meeting with the Buddha, Gotama, whose teaching he admires but does not join; and immersion in worldly life under the merchant Kamaswami and the courtesan Kamala, where he learns love, commerce, and gambling. Disgusted by his own materialism, he returns to the river, where the ferryman Vasudeva teaches him to listen to the water’s many voices. A central framework is the contrast between words and direct experience—Siddhartha argues that teaching cannot transmit wisdom. Another is the river as symbol of unity, time, and the simultaneous whole of existence. The chant “Om” recurs as a bridge between suffering and peace. The ending, though famous, is not spoiled here. Hesse wrote the book after visiting India and drew on Buddhist, Hindu, and Taoist ideas without adhering strictly to any. Its German title is also Siddhartha.
