Skin in the Game

In "Skin in the Game," Nassim Nicholas Taleb argues that bearing the consequences of one's decisions is the essential filter for fairness, risk, and knowledge. The fifth book of his Incerto series applies the idea across ethics, markets, and politics, built on the principle that those who take risks and are paid by them should never be separated from the downside. A central framework is the distinction between symmetry and asymmetry: a surgeon who operates on you versus one who merely advises, or the difference between ancient artisans who risked their lives constructing bridges and modern consultants who bear no cost when their predictions fail. Taleb coins "Bob Rubin trade" for the pattern, named after the former Treasury secretary, in which executives collect huge bonuses from gains but are shielded from losses by bailouts. He scrutinizes the "intellectual yet idiot," his term for academics and pundits who comment on the world without risking anything, and defends the minority rule, the paradox by which a small, intransigent group (like kosher food consumers or nondrinkers) dictates the choices of the entire population. The Lindy effect, borrowed from his earlier work, holds that nonperishable things—ideas, technologies, books—gain life expectancy as they survive, an argument against novelty for its own sake. Taleb draws on the Hammurabi Code, which punished builders whose houses collapsed on inhabitants, and dissects the ethics of intervention, arguing that those who benefit from volatility should also be exposed to it, and that the Stiglitz-Samuelson school of economists, along with editors and journalists, should face the same rules they impose on others. The result is a polemical case for symmetry: no advice without exposure, no authority without accountability, no profits without the possibility of ruin.
