Sophie's World

Jostein Gaarder’s novel Sophie’s World is a history of Western philosophy framed as a mystery story. Its protagonist is Sophie Amundsen, a Norwegian schoolgirl who begins receiving anonymous letters posing a single question: Who are you? These are followed by a course in philosophy, delivered in installments by a mysterious teacher named Alberto Knox. The book moves chronologically from the pre-Socratics through Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, then into the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Enlightenment, and Romanticism, before reaching modern thinkers such as Kierkegaard, Marx, Darwin, Freud, and Sartre. Gaarder dramatizes each era’s central problems rather than merely listing names, using Sophie’s lessons to explore questions about knowledge, nature, identity, and freedom. A parallel plot complicates the narrative. Sophie receives postcards addressed to a girl named Hilde Møller Knag, sent by Hilde’s father, a UN observer in Lebanon. As Sophie and Alberto investigate, they begin to suspect that their own world may be a story written by Hilde’s father. This metafictional device lets Gaarder stage philosophical arguments about reality, authorship, and the relationship between creator and creation, echoing Plato’s cave and Berkeley’s idealism. First published in Norwegian in 1991 and widely translated, Sophie’s World became an international bestseller. It is frequently categorized as a novel of ideas or a philosophical coming-of-age story, and it is often used as an accessible introduction to the history of philosophy. Its central framework is the correspondence-style philosophy course, paired with the escalating mystery of Hilde and Albert’s authorship.
