Mary Beard’s SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome, published in 2015, traces roughly a thousand years of Roman history, from the legendary founding of the city around 753 BCE to 212 CE, when the emperor Caracalla extended citizenship across the empire. The title abbreviates Senatus Populusque Romanus, “the Senate and People of Rome,” the slogan that framed Roman civic identity. Beard, a Cambridge classicist, organizes the book around a central argument: Rome was not a tidy march toward modern democracy but a violent, improvisational system in which citizenship, slavery, and imperial expansion were entangled. Distinctive to SPQR is Beard’s insistence on reading against the grain of elite sources. She devotes sustained attention to Cicero’s letters and speeches as a window into the late Republic’s political chaos, but also to inscriptions, tombstones, graffiti, and archaeological evidence that reveal non-elite lives. Key figures include the Gracchi brothers, whose land reforms sparked factional violence; Marius and Sulla, whose rival armies marched on Rome; Pompey and Caesar, whose rivalry ended the Republic; and Augustus, whose principate Beard treats as a novel experiment in one-man rule rather than a simple restoration. Beard also foregrounds questions of who counted as Roman. She examines the Social War, the gradual extension of citizenship to Italians and provinces, and the role of enslaved people in the economy and household. Caracalla’s edict, she suggests, capped a long, uneven process rather than a sudden transformation. Throughout, Beard resists triumphalism, noting the fragility of Roman institutions and the gaps in our evidence. The result is a critical, accessible synthesis that treats Roman history as a contested story of power, inclusion, and exclusion rather than a simple prelude to the modern West.
