Simon Sebag Montefiore’s Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar is a landmark history of Joseph Stalin’s dictatorship, built around the central framework of the “court” rather than a conventional solo biography. Montefiore, drawing on previously closed Soviet archives opened after 1991, portrays Stalin as a paranoid yet magnetic ruler presiding over an inner circle whose members—Molotov, Kaganovich, Beria, Khrushchev, Zhdanov, and others—jockeyed for favour while fearing for their lives. The book’s pages turn on the rhythm of Kremlin dinners, dacha nights, and Politburo intrigues, showing how ideology, terror, and personal loyalty fused.
