The 5 Love Languages

First published in 1992, Gary Chapman's "The 5 Love Languages" proposes that people give and receive love in five distinct ways: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Chapman, a marriage counselor, argues that conflict often arises because partners express affection in their own primary language while failing to recognize the different language their spouse speaks. The book grew out of his counseling practice, where he noticed recurring patterns in couples who felt unloved despite sincere efforts to show care. At the center of the book is the concept of the "love tank": when a person's emotional need for love goes unmet, resentment and withdrawal follow, and when it is filled, the relationship tends to run more smoothly.
