The Art of Loving

Erich Fromm’s *The Art of Loving*, published in 1956, is a philosophical and psychoanalytic inquiry into love as a practice rather than a passive emotion. Fromm, a German-born social psychologist associated with the Frankfurt School, argues that modern capitalist society distorts love into a commodity exchanged on a market of personal attractiveness, and that genuine love requires knowledge, care, responsibility, and respect.
