The Art of War

The Art of War is a classic Chinese military treatise attributed to the ancient strategist Sun Tzu, likely composed during the Eastern Zhou period roughly between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. Written as thirteen terse chapters, the work is not a narrative but a systematic analysis of conflict, addressing topics such as estimates, waging war, attack by stratagem, tactical dispositions, energy, weaknesses and strengths, maneuver, variation in tactics, the army on the march, terrain, the nine situations, attack by fire, and the use of spies. Its central argument is that victory is best secured through foreknowledge and planning rather than prolonged bloodshed. Sun Tzu emphasizes assessing five fundamental factors—moral influence, weather, terrain, command, and doctrine—before committing to battle, and he famously advises that the supreme excellence is to subdue the enemy without fighting. The text distinguishes between direct and indirect methods, urging commanders to appear weak where strong, to exploit the enemy’s unguarded positions, and to adapt like water to shifting circumstances. Unlike later Western works that focus on attrition, The Art of War treats deception, speed, and psychological advantage as decisive. It also warns of the costs of protracted campaigns on the state and its resources. Though addressed to generals and rulers, its principles have been widely applied to politics, diplomacy, and business strategy.
