The Baby Book

The Baby Book by William Sears, a pediatrician, and his wife Martha, a nurse, presents a parenting philosophy known as attachment parenting. Central to this approach is the concept of "baby wearing," where infants are carried in a sling or carrier for much of the day, and the practice of "nighttime parenting," which includes bed-sharing and breastfeeding through the night to meet a baby's needs promptly. A distinctive feature is the "high-need baby" concept, describing infants who require more holding, feeding, and responsiveness than average. Rather than viewing this as a problem to correct, Sears encourages parents to adapt to the child's temperament. He also addresses common concerns like feeding schedules and sleep training, generally advising against rigid routines that separate mother and baby. The book includes sections on special situations such as premature birth, adoption, and working parents.
