The Brothers Karamazov

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s final novel, *The Brothers Karamazov*, is a philosophical murder mystery set in the provincial Russian town of Skotoprigonyevsk. It centers on the Karamazov family: the dissolute landowner Fyodor Pavlovich and his three legitimate sons—Dmitri, a passionate, impulsive ex-soldier; Ivan, an intellectual atheist and journalist; and Alyosha, a gentle novice attached to the local elder Zosima—along with the servant Smerdyakov, rumored to be Fyodor’s illegitimate child. The plot’s engine is a love rivalry and an inheritance dispute that culminates in the old man’s murder, with Dmitri arrested for a crime he did not commit. Around this crime, Dostoevsky builds a polyphonic debate over God, free will, and moral responsibility. Ivan’s “Grand Inquisitor” chapter, a prose poem he recounts to Alyosha, imagines Christ returning to Seville during the Inquisition and being imprisoned by the Church’s cardinal, arguing that humanity cannot bear freedom and needs mystery, miracle, and authority. Elder Zosima’s teachings on active love, universal guilt, and the interconnectedness of all creation counter Ivan’s logic. The novel also experiments with narrative form: an unnamed first-person narrator who is a local resident, and a structure that moves from scandalous family drama to courtroom spectacle. Key threads include Dmitri’s “confession” of his inner struggle, Ivan’s hallucinatory conversation with the devil, and the subplot of the schoolboy Ilyusha, whose suffering and death crystallize Alyosha’s commitment to a life of practical compassion. Widely considered a summit of psychological and theological fiction, it remains a landmark of nineteenth-century Russian realism.
