The Chip

T.R. Reid’s "The Chip" (1984) is a popular history of the integrated circuit, built around the people and companies that turned a laboratory curiosity into the defining technology of the late twentieth century. Reid, then a Washington Post correspondent, traces the invention to two Americans working independently in 1958: Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments, who built a crude germanium device, and Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor, whose silicon version using planar processing became the manufacturable blueprint for all later chips. The book’s central thread is the shift from discrete transistors to microscopic circuits etched on silicon, and the industrial culture that made it possible. Reid devotes considerable space to Fairchild’s founders, the so-called “traitorous eight” who left William Shockley’s lab, and to the company’s spin-off ecosystem. He follows Noyce and Gordon Moore to Intel, describing the 1971 introduction of the 4004 microprocessor, a programmable “computer on a chip” that reframed the chip from component to system. The narrative also covers the patent disputes between Kilby and Noyce, resolved by cross-licensing rather than a clear victor. Reid sets the story against the Cold War, especially the space race and Minuteman missile program, which gave early chips their first guaranteed customers and drove down costs through volume. He also examines Japan’s state-backed challenge to American semiconductor leadership, a theme that made the book notable in policy circles. Reid’s argument is that the chip’s ascent depended less on lone genius than on dense networks of engineers, venture capital, military procurement, and regional agglomeration in what became Silicon Valley.
