The Coddling of the American Mind

In The Coddling of the American Mind, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt argue that a set of well-intentioned but ultimately harmful ideas has taken hold on American college campuses since around 2013. They identify three "Great Untruths": the untruth of fragility (what doesn't kill you makes you weaker), the untruth of emotional reasoning (always trust your feelings), and the untruth of us versus them (life is a battle between good and evil people). These ideas, the authors contend, contradict basic findings of cognitive behavioral therapy and ancient wisdom about resilience. The book blends psychology, sociology, and case studies from universities. It traces contributing causes: rising rates of anxiety and depression among teens, changes in parenting that reduced free play and independence, the "safetyism" culture that prioritizes emotional safety over intellectual challenge, and the spread of new identity politics that emphasize common-enemy narratives. The authors discuss concepts like microaggressions, trigger warnings, and bias-response teams, arguing these practices can backfire by teaching students to avoid discomfort rather than engage with opposing views. They cite incidents such as protests that shut down speakers and investigate professors for unpopular statements. Lukianoff and Haidt also propose solutions, including encouraging "cognitive behavioral" habits, promoting viewpoint diversity, and resisting the urge to protect students from ideas they find offensive. They aim not to dismiss concerns about real harassment or injustice, but to distinguish those from mere disagreement. The book became a bestseller and sparked widespread debate about free speech, campus culture, and the psychological effects of overprotection.
