The Crusades

Thomas Asbridge’s *The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land* is a single-volume narrative covering the two-century struggle between Latin Christendom and the Islamic Near East, from Pope Urban II’s appeal at Clermont in 1095 to the fall of Acre in 1291. Asbridge frames the movement not as one continuous war but as two distinct phases separated by the loss of Jerusalem: a First Crusade that culminated in the capture of the holy city in 1099, followed by a Second Crusade born of that settlement’s fragile defence and the later campaigns of Saladin, Richard the Lionheart, and the Mamluk sultan Baybars. The book’s distinctive contribution is its sustained double perspective. His underlying claim is that the crusading ideal endured because it fused pilgrimage, penance, and warfare into a single act, and that its legacy was as contested in the medieval present as it is now.
