The Dhammapada

The Dhammapada is a foundational text of Theravada Buddhism, traditionally attributed to the Buddha himself. Composed of 423 verses in the Pali language, it forms part of the Khuddaka Nikaya within the Pali Canon and has been translated into hundreds of languages, making it one of the most widely read spiritual texts in the world. The title combines "dhamma," meaning the teachings or truth, and "pada," meaning path or footprint. The verses are organized into 26 chapters, each addressing a distinct theme. The opening pair of verses, the Yamaka Vagga, establishes the text's central psychological premise: mental states precede actions, and hatred is never appeased by hatred but only by non-hatred. The Appamada Vagga stresses heedfulness and diligence as the path to the deathless, while the Papa Vagga examines how a person who does evil suffers in this life and the next. The Buddha Vagga, the most quoted chapter, describes the awakened mind as a fish that has escaped its net and a bee that gathers nectar without harming the flower. The Tanha Vagga analyzes craving as the root of suffering, using the image of a vine that strangles a forest. Other chapters cover anger, monks, the brahmin ideal, the fool and the wise, and the mind's fickleness. Most verses are short, aphoristic, and didactic, typically pairing a mistaken view with its corrective. They draw on everyday imagery: arrows, chariots, fires, and the moon emerging from clouds. The text has no single narrative arc and no protagonist beyond the Buddha as teacher. It presents a practical ethics of non-violence, self-mastery, and mindfulness, grounded in the framework of karma and rebirth, and repeatedly insists that outward ritual cannot substitute for inner purification.
