The Drama of the Gifted Child

In *The Drama of the Gifted Child*, psychoanalyst Alice Miller argues that what society often labels giftedness in a child—heightened sensitivity, empathy, and an intuitive ability to read others’ needs—frequently originates in early emotional deprivation. First published in German in 1979 as *Das Drama des begabten Kindes*, the book became a landmark in the literature on childhood trauma and narcissistic parenting. Miller proposes that children whose parents need them to be attuned, compliant, and emotionally supportive learn to suppress their own feelings and become experts at serving others, a pattern she calls the “false self.” The true self, with its spontaneous wants and grievances, goes underground. Miller develops this through the concept of the “narcissistically deprived” child, whose mother or father was emotionally unavailable or used the child to meet parental needs. Because the child cannot risk losing the parent’s love, they idealize the parent and internalize the belief that their own needs are illegitimate. Miller describes how this repressed pain resurfaces in adulthood as depression, emptiness, grandiosity, or the compulsion to repeat the dynamic with partners and children. The book’s second half critiques traditional psychoanalysis, including Miller’s own training, arguing that therapists who avoid confronting their own childhood wounds can unconsciously collude with patients’ denial. She insists that genuine healing requires mourning what was lost—acknowledging the abuse or neglect that was never named—rather than intellectual insight alone. Widely read and debated, the book helped popularize the idea that unresolved childhood suffering shapes adult depression and that feeling the truth of one’s history, not merely explaining it, is central to recovery.
