The Enchiridion

The Enchiridion, or Manual, is a concise compilation of the teachings of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, assembled by his student Arrian in the second century CE. Unlike the longer Discourses, this short handbook distills Epictetus’s core doctrines into brief, portable maxims meant for daily ethical practice. Its central framework is the distinction between what is “up to us” and what is not: our judgments, impulses, desires, and aversions fall under our control, while the body, reputation, property, and external events do not. From this dichotomy flows the book’s recurring argument that distress arises not from things themselves but from our opinions about them. The Enchiridion repeatedly urges readers to reframe hardships—exile, illness, loss—as neither good nor evil in themselves, and to train desire so that it attaches only to what is genuinely within our power. Specific chapters address duties toward family, citizenship, and the gods; how to respond to insults; how to behave at a banquet or in public office; and how to prepare for death. Epictetus uses vivid analogies—the soul as a vessel, life as a festival, the body as a borrowed donkey—and draws on examples such as Socrates and Diogenes. The work closes with three purificatory sayings: “Lead me, Zeus, and you, Fate,” “Whoever yields to necessity is wise,” and “Criton, if this is the will of the gods, so be it.” The Enchiridion influenced Stoic practice, early Christian asceticism, and later thinkers from Montaigne to Marcus Aurelius’s readers.
