The Explosive Child

In *The Explosive Child*, clinical psychologist Ross W. Greene argues that chronically inflexible, easily frustrated children are not simply oppositional or poorly disciplined; they lag in specific cognitive skills—flexibility, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving—and traditional reward-and-punishment systems tend to escalate rather than resolve conflict. Greene frames these children as having a developmental delay in the skills required to handle unpredictability, not a motivational deficit. Central to the book is the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, originally called Collaborative Problem Solving. Greene distinguishes three common adult responses to unmet expectations: Plan A (imposing adult will), Plan B (collaborative problem solving), and Plan C (dropping expectations temporarily). He recommends Plan B, which has three steps: the Empathy step (gathering the child's concern), the Define Adult Concerns step (stating the adult's concern), and the Invitation step (brainstorming solutions both parties can actually do). Greene introduces the concept of "lagging skills and unsolved problems," often documented using the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP), a checklist tool included in the book. He emphasizes that challenging behavior occurs when demands exceed a child's current capacity, and that identifying specific triggers—transitions, homework, screen time, sibling conflict—matters more than labeling a diagnosis. The book also addresses how CPS applies across settings, including school, and how it differs from conventional behavior-modification plans. Rather than promising compliance, Greene presents CPS as a way to reduce conflict, teach missing skills over time, and preserve the parent-child relationship. The revised edition includes updated language and expanded guidance for implementing Plan B consistently.
