The First-Time Manager

Loren B. Belker’s The First-Time Manager is a practical guide for employees who have just moved into supervisory roles and are learning how dramatically the job differs from being an individual contributor. Originally published in 1981 and later revised with coauthors Gary S. Topchik and Jim McCormick, the book is organized as a sequence of short chapters that follow the new manager’s typical concerns: the first day, building trust, delegating, hiring, motivating, disciplining, and managing one’s former peers.
