The Help

Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel *The Help*, published in 2009, is set in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early 1960s and unfolds through three alternating first-person narrators. Aibileen Clark is a Black maid raising her seventeenth white child while grieving her own son’s death; Minny Jackson is a sharp-tongued, frequently fired housekeeper trapped in an abusive marriage; and Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan is a white Ole Miss graduate who returns home to find her college friends married with children while she wants a writing career. The novel’s central framework is Skeeter’s secret project: collecting and publishing the testimonies of Black domestic workers about their employers. Aibileen agrees first, Minny joins reluctantly, and roughly a dozen other maids eventually contribute, though the book is published anonymously. The narrative rotates among the women, with Aibileen’s and Minny’s chapters carrying the daily texture of Jim Crow Jackson—separate bathrooms built for “the help,” church, wages, and the constant risk of retaliation—while Skeeter’s chapters track her growing distance from her social circle and her ailing mother, Charlotte. The novel was Stockett’s first, inspired in part by her own family’s maid growing up in Mississippi. It became a bestseller and was adapted into a 2011 film. A recurring criticism is that a white author centered a white character within a Black story, and the Association of Black Women Historians publicly faulted the book’s historical accuracy, particularly its treatment of dialect and the civil rights movement.
