The Home Edit

In *The Home Edit*, professional organizers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin translate their Nashville-based business into a signature method for sorting and styling household spaces. Their core framework, called the Home Edit System, moves through four steps: edit, categorize, contain, and maintain. Editing means pulling everything out and discarding what no longer belongs; categorizing groups like items together rather than storing them by room; containing places those groups into clear bins, turntables, and drawer dividers; and maintaining keeps the arrangement from collapsing. The book pairs this method with its visual hallmark: arranging items in rainbow order, which Shearer and Teplin argue makes shelves readable and signals clearly when something has strayed out of place. The authors apply the system room by room, from kitchens and pantries to bathrooms, closets, playrooms, and garages, and they devote attention to small-space and shared-home challenges. A recurring principle is the "prime real estate" rule—reserving the most accessible shelves for the items used most often—alongside the idea of zones, in which an entryway or closet is divided by purpose rather than by container size. The book grew out of the company Shearer and Teplin founded in 2015, whose clients included celebrities and whose rainbow-ordered pantry photos spread widely on Instagram. *The Home Edit* presents organization less as deep cleaning than as editing: deciding what earns a place, giving it a visible home, and building daily habits that keep the system intact.
