The Humans

Matt Haig’s novel The Humans follows Andrew Martin, a Cambridge mathematics professor—except the real Andrew has been murdered and replaced by an alien who has taken over his body. The unnamed narrator is a Vonnadorian sent to Earth to erase evidence of Andrew’s breakthrough: a proof of the Riemann hypothesis, which the aliens fear will let humanity advance too far, too quickly. His mission is to destroy the professor’s work, eliminate anyone Andrew told, and return home. Disguised as a human, he must navigate Andrew’s marriage to his wife, Isobel, his fragile relationship with his teenage son, Gulliver, and his academic colleagues, all while finding human behavior baffling and often repellent. The novel’s comedy and pathos come from the narrator’s literal-minded observations of everyday life. He writes lists of “Advice for a Human,” noting mundane things like the importance of dogs, poetry, and peanut butter, and he studies a mathematics textbook left for Gulliver that explains prime numbers, the Riemann hypothesis, and other ideas. Through Andrew’s family and a few encounters—including a meeting with Professor Daniel Russell at Cambridge—the alien slowly shifts from disgust at human violence and contradiction to affection for human kindness, love, and imperfection. The tension between his duty to complete the mission and his growing attachment drives the plot, which blends science fiction with domestic drama and wry social satire. The book is a first-person narrative about identity, empathy, and what makes a life worth living, told through an outsider’s bewildered, gradually warming voice.
