The Iliad

Homer’s *The Iliad* is an ancient Greek epic poem, composed orally and set during the final weeks of the ten-year Trojan War. It does not narrate the whole conflict, nor the fall of Troy, but focuses on a single, devastating episode: the rage of Achilles, the Greeks’ greatest warrior, after his commander Agamemnon seizes his war prize, the captive Briseis. The poem’s central framework is the wrath of Achilles and its catastrophic cost. Withdrawing from battle, Achilles appeals to his mother, the sea goddess Thetis, who persuades Zeus to favor the Trojans until the Greeks honor her son. The resulting Trojan advance threatens the Greek camp and forces a sequence of duels, including the famous encounter between Paris and Menelaus and the fatal meeting of Hector, Troy’s prince, with Patroclus, Achilles’ closest companion. Patroclus’ death, wearing Achilles’ armor, finally turns Achilles back to war, seeking vengeance against Hector. Widely reported premises include the poem’s structure around alternating scenes on the battlefield and on Mount Olympus, where gods take sides and intervene. Major figures include Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus, Ajax, Hector, Priam, Helen, and Andromache, alongside deities such as Zeus, Hera, Athena, and Apollo. The Iliad’s distinctive concerns are honor, glory, mortality, grief, and the human cost of heroic rage, closing with Achilles’ meeting with Priam and the funeral of Hector rather than the war’s end.
