In The Innovator's Dilemma, Clayton M. Christensen examines why well-managed, successful companies often fail when confronted with disruptive technologies. Drawing on studies of the disk-drive industry and cases such as the excavator maker Caterpillar and the steel minimills, he distinguishes sustaining innovations, which improve performance along established trajectories, from disruptive innovations, which initially underperform on mainstream metrics but are cheaper, simpler, or more accessible. Established firms listen closely to their best customers, invest in the most profitable segments, and allocate resources to what already works—rational behaviors that nevertheless cause them to overlook or dismiss disruptive threats until it is too late. Christensen develops several frameworks to explain this pattern. The value network concept shows how a company's cost structure, customers, and distribution channels shape which innovations appear attractive. The technology supply and market demand S-curves illustrate how performance can overshoot what mainstream customers need, opening room for simpler alternatives. His principle of resource allocation holds that investment decisions follow the priorities of senior management and existing customers, not isolated technical merit. He also describes the dilemma of innovation: waiting for clear market data before acting almost guarantees missing the disruptive wave, because such data does not exist early on. The book's remedy is organizational rather than merely strategic. Christensen argues that disruptive ventures should be spun into small, autonomous units with separate cost structures and the freedom to pursue emerging, lower-margin markets, as IBM did with the PC and Hewlett-Packard did with printers. Managers must match the organization's capabilities to the task and be willing to accept smaller initial profits. Published in 1997, The Innovator's Dilemma became a foundational text in innovation and strategy, and its ideas about disruption continue to shape how executives and scholars interpret technological change and competitive failure.
