The Interior Castle by Teresa of Ávila is a foundational work of Christian mysticism, written in 1577 and structured around a single, extended metaphor: the soul as a castle made of diamond or clear crystal, containing seven concentric mansions. The soul’s journey begins at the outer walls and progresses inward toward the innermost chamber, where the greatest intimacy with God is found. Teresa, a Spanish Carmelite nun and reformer, wrote the book as a guide for her sisters in prayer, drawing on her own contemplative experience rather than abstract theology. The first three mansions describe initial stages of conversion and ascetic effort, where the soul struggles against distractions and begins to practice recollection. The fourth mansion introduces the “prayer of quiet,” a supernatural infusion of contemplative peace that cannot be achieved by human effort alone. The fifth mansion explores the “prayer of union,” a deeper absorption in God, while the sixth mansion details intense trials, including spiritual desolation, locutions, and the mystical wounding of the heart. The seventh and final mansion describes spiritual marriage, an indissoluble union with God that brings profound interior peace and a desire to serve. Throughout, Teresa insists that progress is measured not by ecstasies or visions but by humility, charity, and detachment from self-will. The castle’s central rooms are not earned by technique but given by grace. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance literature and Catholic spirituality, the book remains a primary text for understanding contemplative prayer in the Carmelite tradition.
