The Interpretation of Dreams

Sigmund Freud’s *The Interpretation of Dreams*, first published in 1900, is the foundational text of psychoanalysis and the book Freud himself considered his most important. Its central argument is that dreams are not random neurological noise but disguised fulfillments of unconscious wishes, typically sexual or aggressive in nature, which are unacceptable to the waking mind. Freud develops a topographic model of the mind—unconscious, preconscious, and conscious—and describes how a “dream-work” transforms latent dream thoughts into the manifest dream content through four mechanisms: condensation, displacement, considerations of representability, and secondary revision. He distinguishes the manifest dream (what the dreamer remembers) from the latent content (its hidden meaning), and introduces the idea that every dream is a wish fulfillment, though anxiety dreams and nightmares require more complex explanation. The book’s most famous case is the “dream of Irma’s injection,” which Freud analyzes in detail as his own self-analysis, alongside dreams of patients and literary examples. Freud also examines the role of childhood experiences, the Oedipus complex, and the significance of day residues. He argues that dreams serve as the “royal road to the unconscious,” making them essential for clinical work. The first edition sold poorly, but later editions and translations established it as a cornerstone of depth psychology. Its methodology—free association, dream interpretation, and the assumption of psychic determinism—shaped twentieth-century psychotherapy, literary criticism, and cultural theory, even as many of its specific claims remain scientifically contested.
