The Kite Runner

Khaled Hosseini’s debut novel The Kite Runner begins in 1970s Kabul, Afghanistan, and centers on Amir, a privileged Pashtun boy, and Hassan, his Hazara servant’s son and closest companion. The two share a passion for kite fighting, including the winter tournaments in which boys slice rivals’ strings and chase the fallen kites; Hassan, a gifted runner, retrieves them. Their bond is shadowed by ethnic and class prejudice, by Amir’s longing for the approval of his father, Baba, and by a traumatic event that fractures their friendship and drives Amir toward betrayal and, eventually, guilt. The narrative unfolds in three broad movements: Amir’s childhood in Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion; his emigration with Baba to California, where he builds a new life as a writer while carrying unresolved shame; and his return to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan as an adult, seeking a way to atone. Key motifs include kites and kite running, scars and disfigurement, literacy and storytelling, and the idea of redemption through action rather than words. Hassan remains a moral touchstone, associated with loyalty and an old story about a boy who learns he can kill with a slingshot if threatened. The book examines friendship, cowardice, class and ethnic inequality, the immigrant experience, and the long reach of childhood choices. Published in 2003, it became a bestseller and book-club staple, later adapted into a film and a graphic novel.
