The Leadership Challenge

First published in 1987, The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner grew out of the authors' research asking people to describe their peak leadership experiences. That study, expanded over subsequent editions through thousands of interviews and survey responses, produced the book's central claim that leadership is an observable, learnable set of behaviors rather than an innate gift reserved for a charismatic few. The book organizes those behaviors into the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Each practice receives its own section, broken into commitments and illustrated with cases drawn from business, government, education, healthcare, and nonprofit settings. Kouzes and Posner pair the practices with instruments such as the Leadership Practices Inventory, a 360-degree feedback survey in which a leader's self-ratings are compared with observers' ratings, and the Personal-Best Leadership Experience questionnaire used to gather the original cases. Recurring concepts include the "credibility is the foundation of leadership" argument, captured in the authors' earlier work Credibility, and the emphasis on followers' expectations of honesty, forward-looking vision, competence, and inspiration. The text also discusses the "leadership is everyone's business" premise, contending that the practices apply to individual contributors and middle managers, not only executives. Across editions, Kouzes and Posner have added material on topics such as learning leadership, building trust, and operating in a global context, while retaining the same five-practice architecture and research-based method.
