The Little Book of Hygge

In The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking, CEO of the Copenhagen-based Happiness Research Institute, examines why Denmark consistently ranks among the world's happiest countries and identifies hygge as a central reason. He defines hygge as a Danish term for coziness, comfort, and relaxed togetherness, roughly pronounced "hoo-ga," and argues it is less a design trend than a daily practice of creating warmth and connection. The book also offers practical components, including a suggested emergency "hygge kit" and discussion of how hygge changes seasonally, especially during the dark Danish winter. Wiking draws on his institute's happiness research and comparisons between Nordic countries, while acknowledging that hygge has no exact English translation and that its commercialization risks diluting its meaning. Throughout, he argues that hygge is achievable on modest budgets and that its core lies in simple, deliberate moments rather than expensive possessions. The result is part cultural explanation, part lifestyle guide, explaining how Danes deliberately cultivate comfort and community in everyday life.
