The Lord of the Rings

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to The Hobbit and grew into a single narrative published in three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Set in the invented world of Middle-earth, the novel follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins, who inherits the One Ring, an artifact forged by the Dark Lord Sauron to control the other Rings of Power. The story opens in the Shire, a pastoral region inhabited by hobbits, before Frodo and his companions—Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took—leave for the Elvish refuge of Rivendell. There, the Council of Elrond establishes the central quest: the Ring cannot be safely used or hidden, so it must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom in Mordor, the land of Sauron. This "Fellowship of the Ring" includes the wizard Gandalf, the elf Legolas, the dwarf Gimli, the men Aragorn and Boromir, and the four hobbits. Tolkien divides the narrative among multiple threads, including the war against Saruman in Rohan and the path of Frodo and Sam toward Mordor, accompanied by the treacherous creature Gollum. Distinctive frameworks include the imagined history and languages Tolkien developed over decades, the concept of the Rings of Power, and the idea of eucatastrophe—a sudden joyful turn after despair. The novel explores themes of friendship, mercy, corruption, and the cost of victory. Its appendices supply chronologies, scripts, and genealogies. Though often read as fantasy adventure, it reflects Tolkien’s interest in mythology, language, and the moral weight of small choices made by ordinary people.
