The Lucifer Effect

In The Lucifer Effect, psychologist Philip Zimbardo explores how ordinary people can be led to commit evil acts under situational pressure. Drawing on his infamous 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, the book argues that character is often overstated and context understated. Zimbardo introduces the "Lucifer Effect" as the process by which good people turn bad, and he names three key psychological mechanisms: deindividuation, diffusion of responsibility, and dehumanization.
