The Nightingale

Kristin Hannah’s novel The Nightingale is a work of historical fiction set in German-occupied France during World War II. The book follows two estranged sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol, who resist the Nazi occupation in profoundly different ways. Vianne, a schoolteacher in the rural village of Carriveau, is forced to billet a German officer in her home while her husband is held as a prisoner of war. Her resistance begins quietly, through small acts of survival and protecting Jewish children, including her young son’s friend Sarah, whose family is deported. Isabelle, the younger and more rebellious sister, joins the French Resistance and becomes a courier for the underground network known as the Nightingale, guiding downed Allied airmen over the Pyrenees into Spain. The novel’s central framework contrasts two modes of wartime courage: the visible, dangerous work of sabotage and escape, and the invisible, daily endurance required to keep a family alive under occupation. Hannah structures the narrative through alternating perspectives and a frame story set in the 1990s, in which an elderly survivor reflects on the war. The title refers both to Isabelle’s resistance code name and to the sisters’ shared legacy of quiet defiance. The book explores themes of sacrifice, sisterhood, moral compromise, and the ways women’s wartime contributions have often been overlooked. It does not depict real historical figures as protagonists but draws on the experiences of female Resistance members and French civilians. The Nightingale is a standalone novel, not part of a series, and was published in 2015.
